Deputy/Secondary HQ Commander[]

  • Unlike the main HQ commander, he cares more for the soldiers as he is willing to provide support and aid and even worries when he loses contact with Unit 12.

Alpha Team[]

Captain Walker[]

Captain Jerome Walker was the man in charge of the military aspects of Alpha Team. His role becomes more apparent in the recordings and documents left behind by Alpha Team.

Jerome Walker was ordered to help Dr. Lori Benedict in any way to help develop the S14 virus. He was also ordered to execute anyone, including Dr. Benedict, who opposes the development of the virus, considering it as an act of treason.

During the outbreak in the facility, Cpt. Walker ordered his security team to stop the infected. During the chaos, Lori, learning of the true purpose of the virus after being lied to, destroys all documents and data of the virus. Cpt. Walker, following his previous order of executing any traitors. shoots Dr. Lori in her final log. That same log ends with Jerome struggling to fight the zombies with his security team. It is assumed that he was killed or infected during the outbreak or that his zombified self was killed once Captain Wood's team clears the facility.

Private Johnson[]

Private Peter "Pete" Johnson was a Alpha Team soldier assigned on guard duty by Captain Walker. He was also instructed to record audio logs by Dr. Lori Benedict to record the military aspect of Project Flatline. Pvt. Johnson would also be the one to release the zombie virus into the world.

As mentioned during one of his logs, Johnson joined the project as a way to avoid deployment in the Afghanistan conflict. He did not take his duties very seriously and often fooled around with the specimen for fun. Dr. Benedict viewed him unfavorably and in private likened him to an overgrown, mentally challenged child with awkward social skills.

During a regular shift, Peter got to close to the specimen cage while messing with the zombies inside and had his left hand scratched by an infected. Peter knocked his attacker out with his rifle and believing the wound to be minor, kept the injury a secret from his superiors for several weeks. Eventually, Peter slips up and mentions his injury in his recording. When Dr. Benedict reviews his log, she realises the danger of an unaccounted infected loose in the facility and orders a facility wide search. Meanwhile, his condition worsened into a fever and fearing the military's reaction, he hid away in a janitor closet in the North Wing of the facility, writing notes to keep himself distracted until the virus overwhelmed him. Zombified Peter went on a rampage, killing and infecting several more before Dr. Benedict found him struggling to record a log, and had him terminated on sight, but the damage was already done. The majority of the North Wing has already been infected and the facility is overrun not soon after. The zombies manage to break out into the surface and flooded into nearby Evans City, starting the Saga of The Dead.

Carlos[]

Carlos was a soldier with Project Flatline. He is only mentioned briefly addressed by Captain Walker in "Infection Alert", when he orders him to help locate Private Johnson.

The Cook[]

The Cook was an army chef working in the facility's kitchen. Despite his low status, he was privy about the presence of zombies, and made frequent complaints and suggestions for improvement about the fact in notes. At one point, he reported that the rotten smell and constant wailing was throwing him off and ruining his cooking, once proposing that his bosses let him feed the zombies food waste to calm them down. Even during the early stages of the zombie breach, the Cook was given orders to adhere to his assigned duties, much to his annoyance, before he was finally commandeered into fighting the escalating outbreak. He presumably died along the rest of the original staff after failing to contain the zombies.

Beta Team[]

Captain Wood[]

Captain Wood is the antagonist of Lab of the Dead and leader of the group of the military survivors that let Allen C. Tyler to join.

Wood's group are the remnants of Bravo Company, who managed to find a abandoned underground military facility near Evans City which was filled with zombies. After clearing it out with his squad, the group decides to hunker down in the facility. While searching the facility, the group finds a basement filled with zombies under lock and key. Allen manages to convince them to leave the zombies alone and let him experiment with it. Captain Wood, humouring the idea and thinking of creating zombie soldiers, allows him.

Over time, Allen starts asking for more and more things for his experiments and used more and more resources for his experiments. Captain Wood and the group eventually grow to distrust Allen and question his belief. Over time, Wood's hopes of zombie soldiers slowly dies down until he becomes the antithesis of Allen, believing that the zombies cannot be trained or conditioned and should just all be killed.

All of the conflict came to a head once Wood finds the documents and recordings left behind by Alpha Team hidden by Allen. After discovering that the virus was developed in a lab and the fact Allen was hiding it from him, he demands that Allen leave the group and head to the surface alone. Allen knowing this was suicide, chooses the most extreme option he has. By way of lethal injection, Allen murders the entire group in their sleep including Captain Wood.

Allen continues his experiments with his specimen, and feeds the remains and flesh of the group to the zombies.

Private Quinn[]

  • Member of Captain Wood's squad.
  • Early on, he bursts into Dr. Tyler's lab to openly state that all of what is happening is "bullshit" and makes it clear that he harbors much dislike against him.
  • Beats up Allen in an altercation 2 months later, followed up by an anonymous death threat.
  • He is killed by Dr. Tyler, along with Captain Wood, and the rest of the soldiers via lethal injection, their bodies are used as food for the zombies later on.
  • Voiced by Anthony Sardinha.

Private Nagato[]

  • Fixed the radio so they could listen in on transmissions.
  • Stated by Dr. Tyler as being the only decent man of the group.
  • Commits suicide to escape being eaten by zombies, and possibly out of survivor's guilt.
  • Left a note apologizing to his teammates and proclaiming his love to a woman named Aiko.

Trivia[]

  • In Lab of the Dead, almost all characters are directly inspired by the characters of the 1985 movie Day of the Dead.
    • Dr. Allen Tyler physically resembles Dr. Ted Fischer, but is based on Dr. Logan, both major characters in Day of the Dead. Tyler and Logan are both extremely logical scientists who become obsessed with reforming the zombies by teaching them how to use items. With time, they eventually become immoral, kill to advance their experiments and use the remains of their military superiors to feed the zombies.
    • Dr. Lori Benedict is based on Sarah Bowman (played by Lori Cardille), the main protagonist of DotD. Both are researchers who attempt to find a cure to the zombie virus.
    • Captain Wood is based on Captain Rhodes, the secondary antagonist of DotD. Both are unstable and angry military men who believe zombies can never be tamed and should be killed. They lash out at the science unit for endangering their soldiers for the sake of experiments, which they both demean as teaching zombies tricks.
    • Private Quinn is based on Private Steel. Both are crude soldiers loyal to their captain, similarly think little of the results the scientists give them and have violent tendencies.
    • Private Peter Johnson is based on Private Johnson. Both are relatively inexperienced recruits to the unit and are killed through reckless behavior.
  • Though none of the zombies are proper characters, their voices were all provided by Jim Kidwell, a.k.a. SickDeathFiend, the artist of all Saga of the Dead games.
